Music's Best Frontman Ever... Cast Your Votes!!!!

Welcome music fans!

This is the opening post in a "vote off" to decide the best frontman of bands throughout history.    Here are the rules:

1)  They should really be from a band.   For instance, Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 is acceptable, but an adult he was not really part of a "band."

2)   If the band has more than one lead singer, you may only vote for one of them or take multiple spots in your list for each.   For instance, you can't just say "INXS," but it is either Michael Hutchence or Terence Trent D'Arby or JD Fortune (lol... let's hope Hutchence gets the votes there).

3)  This is based on them as a front person for the band and NOT with the quality of the band's music.    So if someone is a great frontman and the band sucks, they are still acceptable.

4)   What you deem is the "best" is up to you.   Perhaps it is someone with really unique vocals that has such a distinctive voice that you recognize the singer immediately (Peter Cetera).   Perhaps it is someone with not such a great voice, but is a great stage performer.  Perhaps it is someone who connects amazingly well in front of a live crowd (Danny Elfman - Oingo Boingo).   Perhaps it is a drummer (Don Henley, Phil Collins...).   Perhaps it is someone from a band that was almost a joke (Davey Jones).   Perhaps it is someone from a completely different genre (one of the Gibbs brothers from the Bee Gees).  Perhaps it is a female (Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles.... she gets mentioned just because I thought she was hot back in the day...lol)   Etc, etc, etc...

5)   There are a BOATLOAD of choices of here and I am requesting your Top 10 (only your first 10 will be counted).    I would ask that if at all possible we try to mix it up a little bit and not just pick all the same people from the same bands that dominate on other threads.    By all means, make sure you get at least the Top 5+ filled in with the names that you feel are most deserving (regardless of whether they have been previously mentioned elsewhere or not).   However, if you feel there are some close calls toward the end, try to mix it up with at least one or two names that we don't hear nearly as often.    Of course, you can mix it up with all 10 names or pick all 10 names without mixing it up at all.    I'm just trying to make it a little more interesting with some wild cards.    :)

Lastly, if you could please use the format below (cut and paste) for your picks, it would be helpful when I'm scanning the threads counting votes.   If you want to justify your picks after the fact, by all means I encourage you to do so below the list.     Thanks!

I'll start off by going with (in no particular order):

  • Axl Rose - GNR
  • Bon Scott - AC/DC
  • Stevie Nicks - Fleetwood Mac
  • Jim Morrison - The Doors
  • Dave Matthews - DMB
  • Freddie Mercury - Queen
  • Bob Marley - The Wailers
  • Steven Tyler - Aerosmith
  • Robert Plant - Led Zeppelin
  • Ozzy Osbourne - Black Sabbath

This poll will close at midnight on 5/20/08... then the next round will begin.

EDIT ADDED:

PLEASE!!!

I need to limit it to ONLY 10 picks as otherwise there will be just WAY too many to count.    So please, your Top 10 only.   If you want to list more than 10, that is fine, but do so as "Honorable Mentions" after your Top 10 has been selected.    :)

Cut and Paste in the following and fill it out with your selections:

  1. Frontman - Band
  2. Frontman - Band
  3. Frontman - Band
  4. Frontman - Band
  5. Frontman - Band
  6. Frontman - Band
  7. Frontman - Band
  8. Frontman - Band
  9. Frontman - Band
  10. Frontman - Band

THANKS!!!

Cheers!

Music's Best Frontman Ever... Cast Your Votes!!!!

I can't even believe the names I left off of that list!!!!!     To get your wheels turning some more, here's the list of the RIAA's top selling artists (3 pages to it.... I can't believe that Will Smith and Snoop have sold basically the same number of albums... scary!):

<a href="http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?resultpage=1&table=tblTopArt&action">http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?resultpage=1&table=tblTopArt&action=

Anyway, so my quick reasoning:

  • Axl Rose - Amazing vocals, amazing mastery of music and great stage performer.
  • Bon Scott - Voice was a perfect fit for the band.
  • Stevie Nicks - Had to get some female representation on here.  Very unique voice that is unmistakable.
  • Jim Morrison - Killer front man.   You think of the Doors, you think of Jim Morrison.
  • Dave Matthews - The guy puts on an amazing live show, great connection with the audience and has a cult following.
  • Freddie Mercury - Amazing vocal range.
  • Bob Marley - The look alone separates him from everyone else.  Still to this day he is his own genre of music.
  • Steven Tyler - Amazing energy, unique stage presence and sound.   A slightly more entertaining version of Jagger.
  • Robert Plant - Great vocals and stage presence.
  • Ozzy Osbourne - Come on... the guy bit off the head of a dove and bat... enough said.   lol
  • Cheers!

Music's Best Frontman Ever... Cast Your Votes!!!!

    Bong -

I can't really argue against ANY of your choices, but ...(yes, this is the point where posters start to rip your list)

Steve Winwood - Blind Faith; The Spencer Davis Group; Traffic

Personally, I would bump either Rose or Scott to put Winwood on my list. JMO

    VERY comprehensive list.
