Lots of choices to choose from.
Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas & Andre Reed?
Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith & Michael Irvin?
Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk & Isaac Bruce?
Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk & Torry Holt?
Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James & Marvin Harrison?
Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris & John Stallworth (or Lynn Swann)?
Joe Montana, Roger Craig & Jerry Rice?
Etc, etc, etc...
Lots to choose from, but I'm going with Steve Young, Ricky Watters and Jerry Rice. Their dominance cannot be denied.
In his time in San Francisco, Steve Young had 8 seasons where he led the team in passing. Joe Montana had 10 years doing the same. In that time:
Steve led the NFL in 44 passing categories or 550% of the time.
Joe led the NFL in 19 passing categories or 190% of the time.
Steve was clearly the more dominant of the two. Oh yeah, Steve could run as well.
Ricky Watters also has much better stats than Roger Craig did.
And Jerry Rice remains a constant.
Thus, that set of triplets produced the following places in history:
Steve Young: Passer Rating is #1 all time. Pass Completion Percentage is #3 all time. Interception Percentage is #9 all time. He also amazingly ranks #78 on the all time Rushing TD's list and #149 in all time Rushing Yardage! His 5.9 Yards Per Carry would place him #6 all time.
Ricky Watters: Rushing Yardage is #19 all time. Rushing TD's is #18 all time. Rushing/Receiving TD's rank #25 all time. Yards from Scrimmage is #14 all time.
Jerry Rice: Receptions rank #1 all time. Receiving Yards rank #1 all time. Receiving TD's rank #1 all time. Yards from Scrimmage rank #1 all time. Total TD's rank #1 all time. The most amazing stat about Jerry is that he has 22,895 receiving yards and #2 on that list does not even have 15,000!
So you got the guy with the best passer rating ever who could also run. The best WR in modern times by a mile. And then a guy that ranks in the Top 20 rushers. Rice is so far ahead of everyone else here that it makes up for the Watters' gap quite easily. Then it is tough to find someone else near the quality of Young.
So there you have it.... the best triplets ever. :)
Cheers!
